One of my very first posts was about the different boarders between Shenzhen and Hong Kong. That information is still accurate and you can view that original post here, but I want to update a little more about the Shenzhen Bay or Shenzhen Wan. Since that original post I spent a lot of time going between Shenzhen and Hong Kong before moving across the boarder and then moving back and now its usually the boarder I take when going back to visit/work in Hong Kong.

The time you go makes a big difference

In my original post I mentioned that this boarder was fairly new and quick. It’s still the fastest way to get across if you go at the right time. The longest its taken me was about an hour on a Saturday about 1 PM going to Hong Kong from Shenzhen. Since then I have tried to learn when to go and when not to go. Here is what I’ve found about the time to go:

Lines should be short:

The best time to go from is early in the morning, around 8 AM or early. On the weekdays you maybe OK till 8:45 AM but then it start to get busy, on the weekends better be there at or before 8. Then the best time to go is in the evening after 9 PM, though on Sunday it may still be busy, and the later you get there the better. Note on the Shenzhen side though that if you come back late you may have problems getting a taxi.

Other then that on the weekdays in the afternoon is can sometimes be OK and even Saturday afternoon has been OK, but there is no telling and sometimes it can be really busy.

Lines will probably be long:

It can actually happen anytime during the day if you’re not there early or late as above. However, it defiantly will be busy Saturday after 9 AM and then Sunday evening. The reason is most of the people are taking a tour bus to Hong Kong and all the tour buses go through this border now so it can get full when all the buses arrive.

Also a special note that with the 2011 Universidad in August it will take a long time.

Closing comments and notes

The times above are mostly related to the China side as I have been going through the e-channel on the Hong Kong side, but from what I see it is almost the same since if you get stuck on one side you will get stuck on the other.

Have you had a different experience? Did you get stuck at some of the times I have? Leave a comments and let me know.

I haven’t posted anything in a few months, don’t think anyone is really following but if you a sorry if you keep checking but don’t see any updates. I’ve been busy working and also we where busy moving back to Shenzhen from Hong Kong. We are now living in Shenzhen right across the street from the Kempinski hotel in Nanshan (Costal City area). The job in Shenzhen has kept me busy so I haven’t spent much time writing up posts but figured I should put something up and have time today on this lazy Sunday.

The costal city area where we live is getting crazy as the Shenzhen Universidad will take place from August 12th to the 24th and the big stadium is right here. I’m not looking forward to the two weeks during the games as the traffic here is going to be terrible. On the good side though the ares is really nice with all the preparations almost finished and then Shenzhen Metro it now open normal hours in our area (HouHai Stop) so it is easier to get around Shenzhen, but unfortunately there is no stop near my office.

I hope to spend more time writing some posts but we’ll see if that happens. Leave a comment to let me know if you are ready and you can also follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, or Weibo for those of you in China.

Here is a quick shot of a view from our Apartment Today:

FIRST,

Who the hell is Rica is not that important, the important thing is what i wrote may help someone who want to have some tips.

i am chinese and i just got my US visa, multiple entry for a year. Since i have many of my friends asked me how i got my US visa so i will say I am not the only lucky one you can do it too, and it just happened like this:

· First, i think i get this visa easier because i am in Hongkong and I have Hongkong ID card, although it is just temporary ID, but it helped!

· Before I applied the Visa I heard there are 2 things the Consulate cares and which make them decide they will give you a visa or not

1, you have enough money to support you to travel and stay in US, So you will not become the government’s baggage when you arrive.(so you can provide your bank account to show how much saving you have or your salary flow. Credit card will help too. And of course house or cars or other properties owned by your name)

2,you will be sure return back to China.(especially for the girls who are already marriage age, even you have a lot money you have cars and house in China that still doesn’t mean you will for sure return. So at this time you need to provide more information like your company letter to day you will only have 2 weeks or a month away from work and after that you will come back for sure. And if they can it will be nice for them to say they will be responsible to make sure you will back for work!)

Here are the information I got:

1, an invitation letter from my boyfriend’s parents in US

Have all my information and their information on it and say they will take care of all the expense and if there is anything may happen there they will take the responsibility.

(I think this is good, for me I don’t have a job here so this will help the consulate think that I have the support to be in US)

2, My boyfriend’s income papers and work contract. And he also got a letter for me said he will pay for everything and make sure back to China with me! Because he works here and I am with him so it sounds reasonable.

3, credit cards

4, I’ve been to Europe so I also copied that visa to show them I went there and came back on time so I had good record!

5, Address approve. To show that we have a stable place and we rent it for a year so we will not run away before the contract expires.

I also print some of our contact emails lists for 2 years and some photos of us of different times……..i heard some friends said they will also doubt whether you are really in a relationship or you just use this excuse to get a visa. So I got them …but I am not sure they helped!

Anyway, just prepare as many stuff as you can, you will not lose anything! When I had the interview I just told them: this is the first time I apply so I got so many stuff, if they want to see anything I will be happy to show them.

Beofe all of this:

1. Go to bank to pay the apply fee. Non immigrant visa 1040 HK$ here in HK

2. Prepare a photo and scan it

3. Fill in the form online

4. Make the appointment

5. Take all the papers and go!!!

I hope what I wrote may help some people!

But I heard in mainland it is more strict. but anyway, just be self-confident and tell the truth. No matter how scared you are just relax and think you deserve a chance!

Good luck!!!

Rica wish you the best!!!!

Finally got my visa and will be moving to Hong Kong next week from Shenzhen. Just some updates about the move [...]

I got the news on Friday that the Visa’s for Hong Kong are ready, so all this next week will be busy actually making the move. First on Monday I will be off to Hong Kong to actually pick up the Visa’s and then the rest of the week will be spent getting ready. We have kind of been moving since before Christmas but have been waiting until the Visa’s are done before the move.

Right before Christmas I signed a lease an on apartment in Hong Kong, so I’ll be living in Tsuen Wan. For all the Shenzhen people I know if you need a place to stay in Hong Kong let me know. The apartment there is 1/2 the size or even smaller then what I had in Shenzhen and costs twice as much. Part of the fun of packing has been deciding what we really need and what we can give away/ throw out. We do have some stuff that still needs to go so let me know if you need anything.

We also have a moving company that will take all our stuff to Hong Kong. Mostly its the TV and bed that I can’t take across myself but then we have clothes and all the other stuff. I didn’t realize how much I acquired in the time that I’ve been in Shenzhen. So on Thursday (Jan 14th) the moving company will pick everything up and we should get it in Hong Kong the next day. Hope all goes well and I’ll post more about the differences of life in the two places.

Some pictures and quick note from the Shenzhen leg of the 2009 f1 boat racing championship. [...]

This weekend I had the pleasure of going to the F1 boat racing in Shenzhen. I don’t know much about the sport and I won’t try to explain it here, if you want to learn more visit their site www.f1boat.com.

I was able to get a team guest pass which let me get up close to the boats. Taking a look at them its pretty crazy how small the area the drivers sits is and how fast they end up going, I think over 200 km/h. It also meant I could be close to the track when the boats went around, and that was a pretty good rush seeing those boats fly by. The weather was awesome this weekend so it make the whole event nice to see.

I don’t have much to post other then it was a good time but I do have some pictures. Check out the gallery bellow and I would recommend it if you have a chance.

Instead of people heading to their home town from Shenzhen, I find the more people are staying in Shenzhen and calling it home. This is especially true for this October holiday. [...]

Living in Shenzhen over the last few years I’ve seen a lot change, not as much as some of my friends that have been here longer, but still at lot of change in such a short time. The one thing that’s interesting is the change that happened during the holidays in Shenzhen, China. I thought about this as this past week China celebrated its national holiday and mid-autumn festival and I have been in Shenzhen to see it. This meant that there is a week of no work.

While I have usually take this time to travel in Asia (but outside of China) during Chinese holidays, I have stayed in Shenzhen for a few. With Shenzhen being a city of immigrants from all over China and most holidays having to do with Families people tended to go home for the holiday. What this meant is if you stayed in Shenzhen in the past for a holiday you ended up being one of the “few” people here. It was remarkable to see how a city that’s usually so busy can be so empty during a holiday. All the small shops are closed and there are few people everywhere you go. This was the cast when I first got to Shenzhen.

I want to back track a little and explain holidays in China. In the last few years China has split up its national holidays to more like the west, with more weekend long holidays rather then the two long holidays it had. In the past the “October holiday” was a big celebration and then the Chinese New year being the biggest. I say “October holiday” because it consisted of the mid-autumn festival and the national day. The day of the mid-autumn festival changes because if follows the lunar calendar while the national day is always Oct 1. With the changes to create more long weekends rather then two week long holidays in China this has caused these two holidays to usually be two holidays in stead of the one in the past, I won’t go into more details here, but just know that this year its different then the past two since the holidays are close together creating a long stretch that people don’t need to go to work. Although there are other holidays now Chinese New year is still the “most important” with the mid-autumn festival being the next and the days off reflect that.

So back to Shenzhen, during these two major holidays the city became sort of a ghost town as everyone left for their home town. This doesn’t seem to be the case this week. Wherever I go there are people and all the store are open and full. Its still not as crowded as on a normal weekend, but its impressive compared to other times I’ve been in Shenzhen. More and more people are calling Shenzhen home and more and more people have their relatives and friends visit them rather then going back home. I also find the the people I talked to now would say they are from Shenzhen rather then their home town and if you get into a conversation of how long they have been in Shenzhen its 5 or 10 years rather then just a few years when I got here.

I find it normal based on my experience. When I moved from Canada to the US we use to make trip back to Canada for Christmas every year, but after a few years it just didn’t seem something that was needed as you had new friends that you spent time with. Its interesting to see the same thing happening in Shenzhen, with more people staying here for holidays rather then going to their home town.

So living and working in Shenzhen I end up going to Hong Kong every once in a while. I also get asked how to get to Shenzhen when clients land in Hong Kong or how to get back when they leave our facility or finish a factory visit. Over the few years I’ve been here I’ve used almost all was to get across and have heard different stories at the different crossing. This is just is my experience and advice.

Before going on to the different options for those of you that don’t know, Hong Kong (HK) and Shenzhen (SZ) or mainland China have different customers and border regulations, so going from one to the next is like going from one country to another. Also, all of these are bases on not having a HKID and not being able to use the fast lane which might allow for some places to be a little faster.

There are several different borders that can be used. For the most part the way that’s fastest for you depends where you are in HK and where in SZ you want to go or the other way around. In some cases it also depends on what time you’re going. Here are the different ways to get across.

Shenzhen Bay / Shenzhen Wan Kouan

SZ Location: Nanshan District
HK Location: Tin Shui Wan and also good for the Hong Kong Airport, buses go everywhere in HK
Hours: 630 to 2400 (Though Bridge from Hong Kong to Shenzhen Bay closes at 11:30; from SZ to HK its open later)

Update: Please see updated post about this border as its not longer as fast.

Crossing: This is one of the newer borders and is the large bridge that goes over Shenzhen Bay. I personally use this crossing the most since its close to where I live. Since its one of the newer crossings its also easy to get though customs since the Chinese and Hong Kong customs are about 200 meters from each other so if you walk across with lost of items its pretty easy. This border is also usually pretty calm and you can get across quickly most of the time. It seems to me that most tour buses do use this way now so you can get stuck waiting in customs for a while, but even then its only 20 or 25 min to get across. Most of the time if you walk across it takes about 5 or 10 min. You can also take a Van or private car across which takes about 20 min, again depending on how many people are there.

Transportation Options: In Shenzhen you can get here with a taxi or there are several public buses that get you there. When there you have several options depending on where you are going. If you want to take a van to the airport then go up to the little blue booth right before you walk in, which does say HK Airport, and purchase your ticket and you’ll wait some for a van to come. Unfortunately it does sometimes take some time to get a van to the airport so its best if you call ahead of time and get one scheduled. If you get a van scheduled this is the fastest way to the airport from Nanshan. You also have taxis that will get you to the airport or anywhere in Hong Kong. If you are not going to the airport and don’t want a taxi you can also purchase a bus ticket to take you to many places in HK. Its important to remember you need to purchase these bus tickets before you go across the border, the same places as the Van to the airport. If you go across there is no place to buy the tickets, and I’ve never tried to just talk to the bus. You purchase the ticket to where you want to go and walk across the border and get on the bus. These buses to downtown run frequently, but if you’re going to another area the bus usually runs once an hour so you’ll want to learn the schedule so you don’t have to wait for a while. Other then the “cross border” buses and taxis you can take public transportation. Once you cross the border you can walk a little to the left and get on bus B2P which will then take you to Tin Shui Wan metro station. The bus cost 8.50 HKD and you can use your octopus card, you can also take this to get back to Shenzhen. With the new metro line in HK you can take this all the way to TST and make it in less then an hour.

Shekou Port Ferry

SZ Location: Nanshan District – Shekou
HK Location: HK Island or Kowloon or Airport, depends on the ferry you take
Hours: About 7 AM to 10 PM, depends where you’re going.

Crossing: This is probably the easiest way to get across but can also take some time. In Shenzhen just go to the shekou port and buy a ticket to get on the boat. You do have to be there 30 min before the boat leaves if you don’t have any luggage, and an hour if you do have luggage and are going to the airport. Because of the time you need to be there before and the schedule of the boats it can be pretty time consuming. Also, if you’re going to the airport only certain airlines allow this so you need to check before hand. It is however the easiest because you just get on the ferry and it takes you to HK (or Macao). With Shenzhen Bay open there are less and less ferries going to downtown Hong Kong as it takes less time to use that crossing so you need to go by there and check the times. If from Hong Kong you can just go to the two international ferry terminals and buy a ticket and it drops you off at the Shekou Port.

Transportation Options: Its a ferry, so only the boat. Again, you need to be there early, so if its at 9 AM ferry you need to be there at 8:30 (but they do let you on at 8:45) or if you have luggage for the airport over an hour early so 8 AM. Because of this its usually easier to go to Shenzhen Bay as you can go right though.

Huanggang

SZ Location: Futian
HK Location: Lok Ma Chau but buses go from/to everywhere in HK.
Hours: 24 Hours

Crossing: This is one of the older crossing and the only 24 hour crossing. Its also the busiest and can be really hectic and somewhat dirty on the Shenzhen side. If you’re heading to or from HK after midnight this is the way you’ll go. From HK there are buses that will take you there. Since its and older crossing the China and HK side are separated, so you first cross either SZ or HK border and then take a bus for a few min and then cross the other. You do have to get off with all your items at both border crossings. You would purchase the bus ticket at the crossing in SZ or wherever you get on in HK, and it will take you between the two checkpoints. You can also get Vans here that take you to the airport. I would try and avoid this unless you are after midnight as the other borders are nicer and Futain crossing is 2 blocks away so that that if in this area.

Transportation Options: Like I mentioned above its only with a bus or a van. The buses run everywhere around HK and run pretty often. After midnight from HK there are buses every hour and I would think the same from the SZ side.

Futian Kouan

SZ Location: Futian
HK Location: Lok Ma Chau but there is a metro that takes you downtown
Hours: 630 to 2400

Crossing: I have yet to try this crossing as I’ve had no need to get to Futian from HK or usually go from home to get to HK. I have heard good things about this crossing, as its a new crossing and less busy. This crossing is very close to Huanggang but it has access to the Shenzhen Metro and to the HK MTR. If you’re heading to HK from SZ and your in Futian you can get on the metro, cross over, and take the MTR in HK.

Transportation Options: SZ Metro and HK MTR are your best bets. It is possible to get a taxi to the crossing in SZ but I’m not sure about the HK side. As I haven’t taken it I’m not sure so please leave some comments and I’ll fill this up later on or add to it when I get a chance to take it.

Luohu

SZ Location: Luohu
HK Location: Lo Wu but there is a metro that takes you downtown
Hours: 630 to 2400

Crossing: This again is another older crossing. On the HK side you go right into and MTR station and every time I’ve been you have to take the MTR to get to HK or from HK to this border. As its an older border you end up walking a good amount between the SZ checkpoint and the HK checkpoint. If you have a lot of stuff make sure it’s easy to carry as there is a set of stairs you go up but for the most part you can roll everything. This border is great if you’re in Luohu but it is pretty busy so it can take you some time to get across.

Transportation Options: From SZ you can take the metro and then cross and take the MTR. You can also take a taxi or bus and then take the MTR on the HK side. From HK you need to take the MTR to get here as I haven’t seen any bus that goes here. Also, if you’re heading to the airport you’ll probably want to take a border that goes directly there (you can hire a car that takes you though, but you need to arrange this before and have them pick you up, there is no place to do it once at the border).

[Update for Luohu] If you’re in Luohu district take the Luhou border. Its fairly simple, just take a taxi and have them take you to that border. Then follow the signs that say to Hong Kong. Make sure you follow where it says foreigners as it splits up into Chinese and foreigners but they are close together so if you get to one a guard will tell you where to go. Then follow the crowed once you get out of Shenzhen (thought the first border) and walk up to the Hong Kong boarder, you can’t go anywhere else. Its easy to use but it can be full sometimes and its also a good walk between the two borders. Also, once in HK you must get on the MTR which will take you to where you want to go.

Shatoujiao

SZ Location: Yantian
HK Location: Sha Tau Kok
Hours: 700 to 2100

Crossing: This is a very small border crossing that most people don’t even know about. If you’re going to yantian or that area its ideal as its not too busy. Just watch the times as it closes earlier then most and the transportation to/from here is fairly limited. Its similar to Huanggang in that you get on the bus and must go take it to get to the next checkpoint. If you’re near this crossing its better and faster to take it then the Luohu crossing, but can take some time if you need to wait for a bus to take you to where you want.

Transportation Options: From SZ you can get there with a taxi and there are buses that run there. At this border you buy your tickets for the bus or van after you cross, although they do offer them upfront but just wait until your in HK. There are buses that go to the aiport and also take you down town, but again, as this is a smaller crossing there can be some waiting. From HK you can ask at the bus terminals if they go there or at the airport you can also catch a van or bus to the border. Again you may wait a while to get a bus there.

So those are your options and some of my experiance, as I said at the beginning its mostly where you start or want to go to in SZ or where you are going in HK. Leave some comments if I missed anything or if you have had a different experience at these borders.
