Once you are actually in Hong Kong it should take about 45 min to an hour to get to the airport. You will need to cross the border which varies based on how many people are there but just estimate an hour. What I usually do is just estimate it will take 2 hours to get to the airport from the time I leave my apartment.

Hi Andy,
Thanks for putting up the info! I've been looking into this border-crossing business and your site has been infinitely helpful. I'm planning on taking a 10:30am flight out of the Hong Kong Airport on Friday. How much time should I allot for getting through the Huangguang crossing? I'm thinking of taking a bus that will get me there around 7:45am. The bus company told me that it would take another 40 minutes to get to the airport after the crossing. What's your advice on this timeframe?

Hi Dick, sorry I missed the comment so I'm guessing you already made the trip. Not sure which way you took but to get to HK from the airport there are busses that go direct and most of them to SZW border. When I wrote the post SZW was the best but no it depends on the time as it can also be very busy; not sure how your experience went.

For Guangzhou if you are already in Hong Kong you're best bet is either to 1) take the train directly from Hong Kong to Guangzhou or 2) go to Luohu and take the train from there. There are also bus options but not as straight forward especially as they may go to different parts to Guangzhou.

Let me know what you did and what you would recommend.

G'day mate,

Wow you have some info here. Good on you.

Tomorrow flying in (domestic) to Shenzhen to do a visa run at the border then train to Guangzhou. I read, from you, and heard from others that WAN KOUAN is the easiest and quickest option. Visa meaning- I have double entry30 day visas so, just have to leave the country and get stamped back in.
Could you please advise the easiest way fromShenzhen airport to Wan K. and then from Wan K. to the train station to Guangzhou!

Cheers. keep it up.

You are probably best off getting a cross boarder van. They are available at the border, before you cross out of Shenzhen, and should be 150 HKD. I'm just not sure if they are available that early.

The taxi will work too but you will have to get all the way to Hong Kong before getting on the taxi, so you need to take a bus between the two borders.

If the van isn't available you can also just take a coach. I can't remember the cost but its around 100 HKD or less. This is probably as effective as a taxi and maybe easier as you don't have to find the taxi after the HK side and instead just get on the bus.

Other then the van mentioned above you will need to carry all your stuff which can be a pain if you have a lot. In the van you just sit there and go through.

Once you cross the boarder it will be an hour to the airport, but allow another hour to cross the boarder in all cases just to make sure.

Hope that helps, if not let me know.

When I lived in Shenzhen I used the FutianKouAn border crossing often. Our office was nearby so it was convenient. The HK side is a train only affair. The station is LokMaChau. The trains to this station leave from the same stations as the LuoWu ones and aren't quite as frequent. The train follows the same rout but turns of at Sheng Shui which is the station before either LuoWu or LokMaChau It is a much easier terminal to use as it is newer and well thought out. When you arrive from HK you can go on to the Shenzhen Metro within the same building or go outside and get a taxi (this wasn't always possible!). With the metro now going to Shekou it makes it an alternative to Shenzhen Wan.
